Metamorphosis is an idea and project with a lot of potential and is super different than any other idea I've been challenged to. Inspirational works and artists definitely are going to be key in how to approach this and really find a direction to take. The classic example artist is MC Escher. By using tessellation and repeated patterns he really uses an unnatural, original idea that is really interesting and super stylistic. Across all of his works he makes it seem like anything can transform into anything else. His geometric feel is also really different and interesting to look at and interpret. Finally something that I personally really think is cool is his play on size, as some of his works are HUGE. The emphasis on size is something that I never thought I would enjoy but now really am interested in and this only furthers these ideas and brainstorms. This work by Helena Handbasket is a classic slide by slide example of metamorphosis. I am looking at this image for inspiration because of its contrast to MC Escher's work to expand my horizons of how artistically this prompt can be addressed and the different directions, and even mediums, that this can go in. I like the subtle yet direct transitions and the fully identified start and end pieces. This piece inspires me to try a type of ink or block printing style with its crisp shapes and edges with splatter. With the research I have done, my initial idea is to create a paper mache and rope 3D piece to transform a teacup into a squid. I am most excited to try a new medium and really bring this to life. Maybe I should continue the play on proportions and make it life sized, too...
